Central Oklahoma opened its three-game series at Newman with a 5-1 setback Friday afternoon.
UCO, now 18-9 on the season and 7-7 in the MIAA, is scheduled to play Game 2 Saturday afternoon before wrapping up the series on Sunday.
Central Oklahoma got behind 2-0 in the second inning Friday, when a leadoff single was followed by an RBI triple to center field. An RBI groundout scored the second run.
UCO got one back in the fifth – its only run of the day. Wyatt Gray led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Landen Wood. Jaden Parsons followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and then Gray scored when the two worked a double steal attempt. Parsons was out on the play as Gray made it 2-1.
But Newman responded with two more in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff triple was followed by a pair of doubles and Newman took a 4-1 lead.
NU made it 5-1 in the bottom of the eighth.
UCO had just four hits in the game, with Gray going 2-for-3 to lead the way. Parsons had one of the other hits and Seth Gray added one too.
James Wambold started and threw 4 2/3 innings for the Bronchos. He allowed four runs on seven hits. He didn't issue a walk and struck out four. Bradan Pierce threw 1 1/3 out of the bullpen and only allowed one hit. He struck out two batters. Jase Farmer threw the final two innings and allowed the last run but no hits. He also struck out two.
