In their first matchup of the season versus a ranked opponent, the No. 15 Langston Lions prevailed over the No. 16 Wayland Baptist Pioneers 86-74 on Monday night at the C.F. Gayles Field House.
Leading 19-16 at the 12:43 mark in the first half, the Lions used a pivotal 15-4 scoring run to widen their advantage to 34-20 with 7:47 remaining until halftime. Langston led by as much as 16 points and entered halftime in front 49-35 after knocking down 61 percent (16-of-26) from the field and converting 13-of-18 free throw attempts.
The Pioneers were able to cut the deficit to eight but were never able to turn the tide as the Lions remain unblemished at 12-0 overall and 7-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Led by head coach Chris Wright, Langston has now tied the best start to a season since the 2018-19 campaign at 12-0 and notched their 10th win of the season by double digits.
Tristan Harper led Langston in scoring with 22 points and AJ Rainey finished with 13. D'Monte Brown and Chereef Knox both tallied 12 points apiece and Anthony White pumped in 10 to round out the double-digit scorers.
15th ranked Langston (12-0, 7-0 SAC) returns to the court tomorrow, Dec. 13 in an exhibition matchup at the University of Arkansas at Monticello at noon in Monticello, Ark. The Lions close out the 2022 portion of their schedule at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. on Monday, December 19th.
